The first bar focused solely on bitters, called Amor y Amargo (Love and Bitters), opens this week in New York's East Village. The tiny drinkery is also home to the first branded retail shop for artisan producers Bittermens Bitters.
Like the more classic brands of bitters (Angostura and Peychaud's), Bittermens bitters are made by steeping herbs, barks and citrus in high-proof neutral spirits. What makes Bittermens unique are their exotic flavors, like Xocolatl Mole (deep chocolate notes), 'Elemakule Tiki (cinnamon and allspice notes) and Hopped Grapefruit.
