I got drunk in Miami. I woke up in my hotel room and I thought: "I won't drink bad wine... I won't drink bad wine. That was the moment."
- Master Sommelier Richard Betts
From hangover to market, CC: wines was born. Richard Betts has some serious wine chops. He's the 9th of 114 people to hold the title of Master Sommelier in North America and has been producing wine as a partner in Betts and Scholl.
His mission with CC: is to make a wine that is accessible, affordable, and appealing. "Wine should be a grocery, not a luxury." So, each bottle hovers around $20.
Betts is shunning the oak barrel and butteriness for his chardonnay, creating something more crisp. “A little bit riesling, a little bit sauvignon blanc.”
For the cabernet, Betts has made arrangements to get cult-quality grapes at bargain prices. "With the economic downturn, winemakers can do one of two things: mark it down or pretend like it still sells out, and sell it in bulk, out the back door to me."
