Bartenders' Favorite Muddler
Bartenders' Favorite Muddler

Ask the big guns in the cocktail world about their muddler of choice and they'll tell it's a PUG! (it stands for "Pick Up Gallagher's"). Handmade in the Hudson Valley by woodworker Chris Gallagher, the PUG! is beveled on the top, so it fits comfortably in the palm of the hand, allowing for better control.

Chris uses maple, cherry and Jatoba (Brazilian cherry) woods for his one-of-a-kind muddlers. The 11.5 inch muddler starts at $35.00 and runs as much as $65.00 to $85.00 for limited production exotic pieces. Order by emailing Chris.

CHRIS' TIPS FOR BUYING AND USING A MUDDLER

1. How to pick a muddler that's right for you?

How does it feels when you pick it up? It should feel comfortable in the hand and empowering.

2. What kind of material is best to use?

Look for a muddler that speaks to you, whether it's made of plastic or wood or metal, dark colored or light.

3. How much pressure should you apply when muddling?

Most of the time, less effort is required to muddle your ingredients than you may think. Know your ingredients. Bruising herbs or crushing citrus or pulverizing sugars is key to efficient drink making.

4. How to keep a muddler in tip-top shape?

My recommendations for muddler care are the same as caring for a small child; use mild detergent, keep it out of the dishwasher and store it in a dry location. Also - an occasional liberal coating of mineral oil will help keep it shiny and new.

5. What's your favorite drink of choice?

I enjoy the classics -- this time of year I tend to be drinking juleps. My current recipe calls for Demerara cane sugar simple syrup, muddled mint and Kentucky bourbon, usually Evan Williams Black Label or Buffalo Trace bourbon.
