Road Trip: Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Road Trip: Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Because Pennsylvania is Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and amazing in-between.

- Chef Andrew Little

It's the land of Shoofly Pie, Schnitz und Knepp, and Scrapple (otherwise known as everything but the oink).

Take a drive through Pennsylvania Dutch Country and stop in to eat or stay at the Sheppard Mansion in Hanover, PA. Chef Andrew Little is reinventing the flavors of his childhood and serving a contemporary twist on traditional Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine.

Starting this Friday, June 3rd, and continuing every Friday through the summer, the back patio will be open for music and casual food, like Pennslytucky Poutine.

Here are chef Andrew Little's picks for places to hit on your road trip:

1. CRABB'S TROPICAL TREAT

It's an amazing drive-in in Hanover, Pennsylvania. It's only open from mid-March until the early fall and they have a sandwich called the Fat Boy, which could be described as the Big Mac's much better tasting cousin.

2279 Carlisle Pike, Hanover, T: 717.632.3977

2. FAMOUS HOT WEINER

It's in Hanover and I love it. They specialize in hot dogs with ‘everything,' which consists of a hot dog topped with mustard, chili sauce and an insane amount of onions. Pair those hot dogs with French fries topped with chili and a milkshake and I'm a happy boy. It's a true taste of the area.

Downtown: 101 Broadway, Hanover, T: 717.637.1282

North Hanover: 160 Dart Drive, Hanover, T: 717.632.2424

3. CENTRAL MARKET HOUSE

It's my favorite food market to browse.

34 West Philadelphia Street, York, T: 717.848.2243, www.centralmarketyork.com

4. DUTCH EATING PLACE

It's a food stand in Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market and is one of my favorite places for straight ahead Pennsylvania Dutch cooking.

51 North 12th Street, Philadelphia, T: 215.922.2317, www.readingterminalmarket.org
