47 Hicks Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 (map this) T: 718-722-7777 WHAT: Small, casual Middle Eastern cafe with homemade pitas. WHY: Egyptian native Sam Tutt makes each pop-over pita by hand, per order. It’s believed that the Egyptians discovered raised bread by accident, when a mixture of grain and water was left in a warm place, and the dough puffed up. Sam Tutt may follow in the footsteps of his tradition, but nothing at his café is done by accident. Each pita is made one at a time, by hand and per order. They are baked at a high temperature in a pizza oven, with the result being a fresh, steamy and airy pop-over shaped pita. The puffy bubble pitas are served with a variety of traditional salads: creamy hummus, smoky babaghanoush, tabouleh with large pieces of fresh parsley and mint, and foul, which is made up of fava beans and tomato. The lentils and bulgur salad is topped with crispy, fried onions, making it sweet and crunchy. The merguez (spicy lamb sausage) pita sandwich is juicy and rich, with a hint of cumin. The grilled chicken is well seasoned and served with a zesty tahini sauce, which gives it a tinge of kick. They also serve “pitzas” stuffed pita, served pizza-like. Tutt Café doesn’t serve any alcohol, but you can BYOB. For traditional style non-alcoholic drinks, they serve a refreshing iced mint tea and Loomi, a Middle Eastern citrus drink. This is a very informal cafe. A place to enjoy real deal everyday Egyptian cuisine. Go for the food, not the décor. For Sam Tutt's recommendations, read more here.
