Los Angeles, CA 90036 (map this) T: 323.782.9225 www.animalrestaurant.com WHAT: A bold, farm-focused, meat-centric restaurant. WHY: Because the food is so good, it can entice a vegetarian to cross over to the meat side. The two culinary-trained chefs from Animal started out painting Ben Ford's house, but soon ended up cooking for his famous dad, Harrison. In 2008, they started cooking for the public and this year, they were honored as Food & Wine's Best New Chefs of 2009. Stand-outs on the menu include sweetbreads with creamed spinach, capers and hen of the woods mushrooms; chicken liver toast; pig ear with chili, lime, and topped with a fried egg. Chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo ain't kidding around when it comes to cooking. Their small rustic-style, 45-seat restaurant has a relaxed, accessible feel and to accommodate late night diners, they keep the kitchen cranking until 2am. Their menu changes daily, since it's farm focused. The wine list features an interesting selection of wines by the glass, carafe, and bottle that pair well with the spectrum of food flavors and they also offer a variety of beers and Mexican Coke.
