The Sunday Night Special This Week's Links
Northern Spy Food Co.
Their name sounds like an underground espionage secret society, but Northern Spy is actually an East Coast apple variety.

It's just the right mix of homey and hip that makes Northern Spy Food Co. the latest hot destination. Now, the new kid on the East Village block is doing a Sunday night special: 3-courses for $20.

Half country general store, half restaurant, it's both rural and urban. Wainscoting, planked wood floor, chalkboards - it has vintage schoolhouse charm. But don't start thinking we're talking about a quaint, doily kind of cafe. This is a city joint that takes pride in serving regionally-sourced food.

House-made seltzers with flavors like lemon-lime, quince and Concord grape, Wild Hive polenta with roasted mushrooms, crispy chicken sandwich with a poached egg and chimichurri sauce, and lots of pork (snout to tail) make up some of the menu choices.

They also sell local artisanal products with names like "Anarchy in a Jar," which in spite of its rebellious name, is actually a jam company. The shelves are stocked with pickles, candies, coffee, serrano chili beans, chips, cheeses and yogurt all from the area, many sourced from the Brooklyn Flea.

When we asked chef Nathan Foot about restaurant recommendations, he noted that these days he only eats at restaurants that respect his dollar. It's good to know that it's true of his own restaurant as well. They not only respect your dollar, but they also respect the product.

In San Francisco, chef and co-owner Nathan Foot recommends:

  • TURTLE TOWER
Northern Vietnamese food. Roasted chicken, sauteed beef, light broths.
  • JARDINIERE
Sit at the bar. Chef Traci Des Jardins always gets really fresh stuff.
  • NOPA
Laurence Jossel hits the nail on the head for casual, well executed food. Right price points. Get the flatbread.

In New York, co-owner Chris Ronis recommends:

  • CAFE MOGADOR
A lot of different experiences in the same place. Can have Falafel or get a three-course meal, with no judgements.
  • GRAFFITI
Tiny and experimental, great chef - Jehangir Mehta.
  • PRUNE
They’ve been doing consistently well ever since they opened, a nice neighborhood feeling.
