Austin for SXSW Rene Ortiz's Credentials
Austin for SXSW

It's the festival where Twitter was launched, "The Hurt Locker" made its US premiere, and Amy Winehouse, the Strokes, and My Morning Jacket showcased. South by Southwest (SXSW) is now in its twenty-fourth year, occurring every spring in Austin, Texas and kicking off today.

If you’re heading to the Lone Star State, chef Rene Ortiz of the contemporary Mexican cafe La Condesa in Austin, shares his recommendations.

La Condesa was just picked as a 2010 James Beard Foundation semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant. Their innovative neo-Mexicano menu is a mix of classic cantina, authentic street food, and upscale specialties from regions like Oaxaca, Veracruz, Acapulco, and Mexico City. They also have over 80 varieties of premium tequilas.

Chef Ortiz’s local picks:

  • DAI DUE for old-style sausage and charcuterie at the Austin Farmer's Market.
  • HOME SLICE for the best pizza.
  • SNOW'S BBQ for brisket.
  • CASINO EL CAMINO has the most amazing burgers.
  • G'RAJ MAHAL is an Indian food truck with table service in the backyard of a house in East Austin.
  • JUSTINE'S for dinner and late night dining.
