Macarons

Bresca chef Krista Kern Desjarlais may own one of the smaller restaurants in the country, just 18 seats, but size didn't matter when it came to being nominated for a recent James Beard award.

Before opening up in Portland, Maine, Krista did stints as a pastry chef at Gotham Bar and Grill and Le Cirque in New York, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and Paris' highly respected Guy Savoy.

While Krista admits to loving strawberry Twizzlers and can consume a bag in one sitting, it's "old school French pastries" that she loves to make like Pithivier, Gateau Saint Honore, Opera Cake, and always has a Financier on her menu.

We asked Krista to recommend her favorite places in the world for pastry and macarons. Her answer... head to Paris!

LADURÉE

Their Parisian tearooms around the world offer loads of chichi pastries and jewel-colored macarons, which come in gourmet flavors like Bergamot, Caramel with Salted Butter, and Jasmine Mango.
