Japanese Yakitori Bar. WHY: An array of meat and fish on a stick with an emphasize on all things chicken. Yes, it's located in Midtown West, but no matter where you’re coming from, this 2nd floor yakitori bar is worth the trek. Hidden up a narrow flight of stairs, you might think you’ve discovered an off-the-beaten-track find, but there are enough people in the know that they run out of the delicious nasty bits early. Those bits being the offal. Served bite-sized on a bamboo skewer, the menu is like a journey through a chicken: heart, liver, gizzard, knee bone, neck, skin, and tail. But we know one man's delight is another’s disgust. So if you’re eating with someone who doesn't like to venture beyond the parts generally offered by KFC, there are other chicken, meat, fish and vegetarian choices. Kobe beef tongue, tuna sashimi, deep-fried silver fish with green tea powder, deep-fried tofu topped with yuzu flavored miso, are just a few options on the menu. The drinks at Yakitori Totto include Japanese beers served in beautiful and artful ceramic mugs, and a full shochu (which is like a Japanese vodka) and sake list. Their shochu cocktail comes with its own juicer and half of an orange or grapefruit for you to do your own squeezing at the table. They also serve various wines, teas, and soft drinks. A few tips:
