Chef's Road Trip: New England
New England

Chef and Master Cheesemonger Matt Jennings is a New Englander. He was born and raised in Boston and now owns three well-respected restaurants in Providence: Farmstead, Farmstead Downcity, and La Laiterie Bistro.

Chef Jennings knows about the little out of the way quality food joints all over the Northeast. Clam shacks. Street trucks. Tiny, cramped diners. Farm-to-table bistros.

If you're hankering for a New England roadtrip, here are a few of Matt's suggestions for unusual stops along the way.

CONNECTICUT

Restaurant: EL CHARRITO TACO TRUCK

What: The king of Latino street food in Southern New England.

Matt Says: "Tacos including ethereal tripa, rich and savory pork carnitas, melt-in-your-mouth lengua (cow tongue), al pastor (pork with pineapple), carne adovada (spicy pork), and chicken."

MAINE

Restaurant: MORSE'S SAUERKRAUT & EURO DELI

What: 100-year old Kraut Haus serving old world cuisine.

Matt Says: "Freshly made perogies, savory sauerbraten, cabbage rolls, homemade spaetzle, schnitzel, borscht and of course, the signature Reuben sandwich."

MASSACHUSETTS

Restaurant: THE CLAM BOX

What: Ye olde clam shack cuisine.

Matt Says: "Clams with crispy onion rings freshly out of the fryer, a side of ‘tahdah' sauce (yes, that's for fry dipping too- don't embarrass yourself by squirting ketchup all over the place)."

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Restaurant: BENTON'S SUGAR SHACK

What: Five generations of making local maple syrups, candies, and jelly. They also serve a hearty breakfast.

Matt Says: "Mile high pancakes with buttery, crispy edges and fluffy interior, stuffed with cranberries and brown sugar apples."

RHODE ISLAND

Restaurant: MATUNUCK OYSTER BAR

What: Seafood house owned by local oysterman Perry Rasso.

Matt Says: "Belly up to the raw bar for the best of what Rasso has to offer, and watch it get shucked right in front of your eyes."

VERMONT

Restaurant: RIVER RUN BBQ

What: Mississippi chef brings "good old boy" approach to his Southern-inspired food in the great Northeast.

Matt Says: "Juicy pulled pork, steaming hot hushpuppies, fried dill pickles, tender ribs, red beans and dirty rice."
