It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up some gulp-able wine at 259 Hackney Road and tote it to the outstanding Pakistani restaurant Tayyabs, which is Halal and doesn't serve alcohol. [AW]

Q. Where was your last memorable food and wine experience abroad?

France

Paris | La Robe et Le Palais

[BStewart] I ate there three times in three days last time I was in Paris! It was excellent each time.

[See details.]

Italy

Montalcino | Trattoria Il Leccio

[AW] Dinner with wine-grower Francesca Padovani (of Fonterenza) at Trattoria Il Leccio, in Sant'Angelo in Colle (Montalcino). Just after we ordered our food, Francesca ran across the street to a small storage garage where she keeps some of her wine. She returned with a bottle of Vouvray from Thierry Puzelat. I loved that she chose a Chenin Blanc from the Loire to accompany the huge array of antipasti - not typical but perfect!

Montalcino | Enoteca Osticcia

[AW] Also in Montalcino, the next morning, with a hangover and wanting a hearty breakfast, I ordered salsiccia (raw sausage) with fried eggs and potatoes and a bottle of Valentini Trebbiano at Enoteca Osticcia. That was a serious breakfast win.

Japan

Tokyo | Rosso e Nero Restaurant

[LL] It involved 3 bottles of Frank Cornelissen’s Magma with charcuterie at Rosso e Nero in Hanzomon in Tokyo.

Tokyo | Seisoka

[MB] Last time I was in Tokyo, I went to a restaurant called Seisoka. They serve slightly modernized versions of traditional Japanese dishes and have a fifth-generation, Edo-style potter making all the ceramics. Both the food and the plates the food was served on were beautiful. My favorite dish was also one of the simplest. It consisted of plain ramen served in a large bowl carved out of ice. The idea was to dip the ramen into a small bowl of egg yolk and then into a little sesame broth. I love Japan for these kinds of simple and elegant dishes.

Kyoto | Deux Cochons

[BStreet] It’s what I wish all wine bars were like - very quiet, and a turntable with plenty of nice records, old mismatched furniture and a super sweet couple running it.

Q. You're finally home, where do you eat and drink in the city?

NYC - Brooklyn

Eat | Restaurants

Trestle On Tenth. [LL]

In Manhattan, a good value is Trattoria Spaghetto at Carmine and 6th (I've been going there for 25 years now), Otto Enoteca for weekday lunch and, behind the Village Vanguard, Taim for falafel. For Chinese, Congee Village (there’s a $10 corkage fee) and Excellent Dumpling on Lafayette. [BStewart]

[See details.]

Drink | Wine Bars

Anfora

I happily stop in at Anfora, but generally I'd rather open something at home. [BStewart]

Ten Bells

At Ten Bells or at home with friends because I can control the music and the volume. [BStreet] + [LL]

I also like stopping in at Ten Bells. [BStewart]

Terroir

I really prefer to cook but I love the Terroir bars in Tribeca and the East Village. Very cool wines, generally. [MP] + [LL]

Night+Market

If I do have to go out, I'll visit Kris Yenbamroong's delicious Thai restaurant Night+Market, at the corner of Sunset and Doheny. His food is insanely good, and he's put together a small but excellent wine list long on refreshing Loire selections. [AW]
