Richard Betts has been a very busy man in the wine and spirits world. In the past few years, Betts has produced wine in Australia, the Rhone Valley and California, and Sombre mezcal in Oaxaca. He also released a book on the basics of wine called The Essential Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert.


Betts is one of only 197 people in the world to be recognized as a Master Sommelier. People have been attempting to pass the rigorous exams since 1973, but very few make it and Betts was only the ninth person to pass the exam on his first try.


His newest project is the release of Astral Tequila, which is a single-estate spirit made from organically farmed Blue Weber agave from Tequila. The agave hearts are roasted in a traditional brick oven and then fermented naturally.


Richard passes along his favorite places to drink tequila and mezcal and eat Mexican food around the country.
