Brunch is one of those confusing hybrid meals. Is it breakfast foods like eggs or pancakes or is it a burger for lunch? We can’t help you with your menu direction, but we can help you narrow down your choices of places. Here are five restaurants where chefs wake up and smell the coffee in Los Angeles.

“When you walk in, there is a sense of home,” says chef Joshua Whigham (The Bazaar by José Andrés). “There are fresh baked breads and pies with a warm comforting atmosphere.” Chef David LeFevre (M.B. Post, Fishing with Dynamite) recommends getting “the poached eggs with tomato sauce and white beans.”

“They have wonderful oatmeal pancakes and the Canadian bacon and scrambled eggs are amazing,” recommends chefs Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis (Bestia). “Their burgers are great and the sausages are homemade. They source them from a farmer they know and every piece of the animal goes into a dish. The food is very simple and really high quality.”

Lindy & Grundy butcher Amelia Posada calls it “one of the only truly farm-to-table restaurants in L.A. and damn good, down home cooking! They use whole animals, cure everything in-house and make everything from scratch. I run into Zach Jarret (in-house butcher) at the Santa Monica Farmers Market every Wednesday buying fresh eggs and produce for their menus.”

Chef Govind Armstrong (Willie Jane) puts this at the top of his brunch list. “The polenta and blackberry cake is incredible.” Owned by co-chefs Karen and Quinn Hatfield of Hatfield's, this is a bakery and a cafe. One of their signature items is the Salted Caramel Pecan Babka and their coffee is Stumptown Coffee. Chefs Walter and Margarita Manzke (Republique and Petty Cash) are also big fans. “We come here on a regular basis for brunch. We like to try new things and it's hard to go wrong with anything on the menu.”

Located in the Brentwood Country Mart, chef Andrew Kirshner (Tar & Roses) declares this “the best brunch in the city.” He attributes it to the talent of chef and owner Jeff Cerciello, who was the Culinary Director for Bouchon, Bouchon Bakery and Ad Hoc, French Laundry, and El Bulli. Cerciello cooks with artisanally-sourced ingredients and serves brunch items that range from Crown Maple Sticky Buns to Deviled Eggs with smoked trout to Pastrami & Eggs.

Chef Brandon Boudet is making Southern California cuisine with a mix of retro diner fare using farmers market ingredients. The menu features dishes like Cajun Catfish and Eggs and Silver Dollar Buttermilk Pancakes, but chef David Lentz (The Hungry Cat) says, “Everything on the menu is great and it’s a place that I can enjoy as much as the kids do.”
