Chef Ryan Hardy is the co-owner of Charlie Bird in Soho and has won over the hearts of New Yorkers with his Italian-American menu and well-respected wine list. Before Hardy became a local New Yorker, he worked at San Francisco’s Rubicon and Montagna at The Little Nell in Aspen, where he served as executive chef for nearly six years and garnered four James Beard Award nominations.

Chefs don’t get the chance to dine out often since most nights they’re in their kitchen working. So when they frequent a place, it really is special to them. Chef Ryan Hardy shares six of his favorite NYC dining haunts. To get his full list of recommendations, download the Find. Eat. Drink. iPhone app.

“Ask for the homemade tofu. It’s not always on the menu, but they always have it.”

“With items like fresh-killed chicken, pig intestine and fish head with pickled pepper - how could you go wrong? One thing to know... it's hot! Seriously delicious Szechuan food. The eggplant and the steamed fish in hot bean sauce is banging. No frills, just right.”

“Even if you can't get a reservation, try for a seat at the bar -- the service and food won't disappoint. The sea urchin pasta is a must.”

“Even though chef Alex Raij hates it when I say this, the Uni toast is ridiculously delicious and a must eat. Also, munch on those fried chickpeas with some ham and a glass of sherry.”

“What's not to love? Danny Meyer, great espresso, pasta and whole roasted pig from chef Nick Anderer, combined with great wine? Sign me up. Get there early for breakfast and try the soft Cacio e Pepe eggs - delish.”
