“Leon's is a breezy neighborhood joint on Upper King Street. It’s cheap beer, expensive champagne, bottled sodas, wine on tap and in bottles,” says barman Brooks Reitz about his new bar and restaurant located in a renovated auto body and paint shop that was named Leon’s. “We have fried chicken, char-grilled oysters, and lots of seafood.”

Brooks garnered a dedicated following when he was behind the stick at The Ordinary and FIG. He is also the founder of Jack Rudy Cocktail Company which makes artisan cocktail mixers. Reitz teamed up with restaurateur Tim Mink to create a causal seafood house, where you drink a Bud and order a dozen oysters shucked by Michael Rogers, who spent 32 years at the New Orleans institution Uglesich's, and is a six-time shucking champ.

Chef Ari Kolender, formerly of Providence & Red Medicine in Los Angeles, returns to Charleston to head the Louisiana-inspired kitchen. Brooks says, “We wanted to bring the same soul of some of the oyster joints that pepper the city of New Orleans, but update it with fried chicken and a large array of lighter, brighter vegetable dishes. We play soul, blues and jazz all day long, and serve solid, cold beer and a smart, simple selection of wine. The place is meant to be easy, cozy and cool - and I think we've done just that.”
